This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is broken into various categories for convenience and ease of identification. It is the purpose of this document to provide certain criteria for the design and selection of stairways, for the boarding of passengers onto an aircraft. The criteria presented are limited to those factors which affect the safety of the passengers and are coordinated, where applicable, with the practices of the architectural profession, with respect to the design of stairways. Comprehensive design requirements for passenger stairs can be found in the industry documents listed under 2.1.3, 2.1.4, and 2.1.5 hereafter. The recommended practices are applicable to both mobile variable-elevation type stairways and to fixed-elevation stairways of the type built into an aircraft fuselage.

The recommended practice describes a design standard that defines the maximum recommended voltage drop of the starting motor main circuits, as well as control system circuits, for 12/24-V starter systems. The battery technologies used in developing this document include the flooded lead acid, gel cell, and AGM. Starting systems supported by NiCd, Lithium Ion, NiZn, etc., or Ultracaps are not included in this document. This document is not intended to be updated or modified to include starter motors rated at voltages above the nominal 24-V electrical system. The starter is basically an electrical-to-mechanical power converter. If you double the available battery power in, you double the peak mechanical power out and double the heat losses. This means that we have to pay special attention to how battery power changes when we change the battery voltage and the effects it may have in overpowering the cranking system.

Over the years during which fluid filtration systems have been developing, many terms have come into use for descriptions of characteristics of filter media, filter assemblies, test methods, and test materials. Inevitably, some terms have been applied loosely, so that the same term may have different meaning to different people, or in different frames of reference. Recognizing the need for clearly defined terms, which can have only one meaning for all persons in all circumstances, so that documents dealing with standard methods of evaluation of filters will have only one interpretation, the Filter Test Methods Subcommittee of the SAE Engine Committee has compiled this Glossary of related terms. No attempt has been made to produce an all-inclusive document, containing definitions of all terms related to all types of fluid filters. Instead, the Glossary is confined to the terms likely to be encountered in relation to filters for lubricating oil and fuels.
